After Hours: The Ember Clause

You arrive at Porto Verano's Ember Room with a clipboard, a demolition schedule, and a grudge you have carried for five years. Rafael Mendes—the man who left without a word, without a forwarding address, without so much as a coward's note—now owns the crumbling hotel your firm has been quietly paid to dismantle. He greets you across the lobby as though the last five years were a scheduling error. The marble is cracked. The chandelier is missing half its crystals. He is not. Then the storm arrives. Bridges close, ferries stop, and the Ember Room's guests are stranded with the man you came to ruin. One night becomes three. Rafael makes coffee the way you still take it, leaves the balcony door open because he remembers you hate closed rooms, and looks at you across the bar like the apology is somewhere in the amber. You tell yourself it is strategy. You are both very good at strategy. A recording surfaces—an old voicemail, a boardroom conversation, a name neither of you can afford to have spoken aloud—and it could end both your careers in a single email. The only person who can help you trace it is the one person you swore you would never trust again. Rafael has the access. You have the leverage. The storm has the exits. The Ember Clause is due in seventy-two hours: sign the demolition, or walk away from the only job that could clear your name. Rafael wants the hotel saved. You want the truth. Somewhere between the flooded cellar and the last bottle of something older than both your grudges, you will have to choose whether to burn the past down or finally let it warm you.
