Deep Sea Discovery

Off the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a routine submersible survey has illuminated something that should not exist: a sunken city of crystal and coral, its lights still burning after twelve thousand years. Lead the expedition that decides what humanity learns about the Last Light of Atlantis—and what is allowed to come back to the surface.

Introduction

Three thousand metres beneath the Azores, your submersible's external lamp catches something that does not belong on any chart: a low arch of fluted stone, smoothed by twelve millennia of current, glowing faintly green from within. The pilot kills the lamp. The glow remains. Somewhere above, on the deck of the R/V Helios, a sponsor is waiting to be told whether you have just made the discovery of the century or the most expensive mistake of your career. The Last Light of Atlantis is not a myth dredged from Plato. It is engineering—pre-Bronze-Age, post-cataclysm, deeply foreign—and it is still working. Bioluminescent gardens cultivated by hands no one remembers feed light to halls that have not seen a human visitor since the sea swallowed them. Crystal lattices hum at frequencies your sonar can almost taste. Glyphs run along every doorway, half a language and half a circuit diagram. Whoever lived here did not build a city; they built a machine, and a piece of it is still listening. You are the lead of a fragile, multi-disciplinary expedition: a research vessel, two submersibles, a budget that runs out in weeks, and a manifest of stakeholders who all want incompatible things. The Royal Geographic Society wants peer-reviewed truth. The Helios Foundation that signed your cheques wants patentable technology. A Lisbon antiquities cartel wants the artefacts on a freighter before you finish breakfast. The Portuguese Naval Authority wants to know exactly what is humming on its continental shelf. And in a marina in Sintra, an old woman from the Order of Tides wants to know whether you are the one her grandmother warned her about. Descent is finite. Oxygen is finite. Trust is finite. The city is not. Every dive trades minutes of breath for fragments of a story that the surface world is not yet ready to hear, and every fragment you bring up changes who is willing to fund the next descent—or sink it. There is no boss to defeat and no prophecy to fulfil. There is a ruin, a question, and the slow, electric realisation that the lights came on when you arrived.
