Rise of the Golden Boot: The Last Season

They still call you the Boy Wonder, though nobody has said it to your face in three years. At twenty-nine you are playing the final year of your contract for Eastwich United, a club with a leaking roof, a losing record, and a stadium that sings your old chant ironically. The clause is simple and merciless: score twenty goals this season, or the club will not renew. Your agent calls it motivation. Your knees call it a countdown. The locker room hides a darker arithmetic. Eastwich United is owned by an underground betting syndicate, and the syndicate has made millions ensuring the team loses exactly when it is supposed to. Yesterday the boss visited your locker—expensive coat, quiet voice, no name worth repeating—and told you to throw the next three games. Fail, and your legs will be broken in a way that ends more than a career. So you play the most impossible season of your life between two ledgers. On the pitch you chase every ball, because twenty goals is the only future you can touch. Off it you learn which teammates are on the take, which are terrified, and which would sell you for a clean sheet. The manager pretends not to notice. The fans notice everything. Every goal you score is a message to the syndicate. Every miss is a message to yourself. Then comes the penalty in the eighty-ninth minute, the stadium holding its breath, the boss watching from a box with a phone in his hand. Score and the net ripples, the crowd erupts, and the enforcers start their car. Miss and you keep your kneecaps, your contract dies, and the Boy Wonder is remembered only as the man who could have saved them. The whistle blows. The beautiful game has never looked so much like a loaded gun.
