Introduction
The satellite image arrived on a Tuesday—a thermal anomaly buried under sixty metres of triple-canopy jungle in the highlands of Kalimantan, Borneo. The shape was unmistakable: concentric rings of stone, radiating outward from a central structure the size of a cathedral. Dr. Elara Vasquez at the Hawthorne Institute confirmed what everyone suspected but no one dared say aloud—Zar'Kanthis, the legendary kingdom that vanished from the historical record in the eleventh century, leaving behind nothing but myth, a handful of bone carvings in private collections, and a silence so complete that most scholars had dismissed it as fiction.
You have assembled the expedition. Twelve people, three months of supplies, and a grant that will not be renewed. The jungle received you the way it receives everything—with indifference and appetite. Leeches in the boots by hour two. The machetes dulled by day three. But on the seventh morning, your local guide, Rahan, stopped at the base of what everyone assumed was a moss-covered cliff face and scraped away the growth with his knife. Beneath the moss: carved stone. Beneath the stone: a face—six metres high, mouth open in a silent scream, eyes set with obsidian that still caught the light after a thousand years.
The causeway beyond the face leads deeper than the satellite data suggested. The ruins are not a ruin at all—they are intact, preserved beneath the canopy like a body under ice. Pressure plates still click underfoot. Dart channels in the walls still hold ammunition. And the radio intercepts you picked up on the second night confirm what you feared: you are not the only expedition here. Marcus Blackwell—former colleague, current rival, and the man who stole your research three years ago—has a team approaching from the north with twice your funding and none of your scruples. The Coral Syndicate, a private antiquities cartel, has mercenaries in the field. And the local Dayak communities speak of a third presence in the ruins—guardians who do not age, do not sleep, and do not forgive trespassers.
The greatest archaeological discovery in history is ahead of you. So is everything that wants to stop you from reaching it.
